I'm Roween (Heesch) Cameron - (widow of Jimmy Lee Cameron, Pratt and Lelia Cameron)

After I finished nurses training at Anchor Hospital in St Paul MN, Jim and I were married on June 4th of 1955. We lived and worked in the Twin Cities, where our 5 children were born. In 1964 we moved to New Market, MN, where we farmed and started our dairy herd. In February of 1971 we moved lock, stock and barrel to a farm near Elkton SD, where I was born and raised. In 1978 we purchased the Elkton Rest Home, which we ran for the next 13 years. Jim bought and ran a livestock and grain trucking business while I ran the Home. In 1991 we remodeled a house on main street in Elkton, and moved there after we semi-retired. I still worked part time as an RN and Jim bought and remodeled homes for rentals, and puttered around in his main street shop.
In 1994 Jim had his first episodes with cancer. He endured rectal and thyroid surgery, and was forced to give up some of his enjoyments in life. I retired at that time.
In October of 1997, Jim was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. He passed away in less than 3 weeks of entering the hospital.
Since then I have moved to an apartment in Elkton, where I enjoy visiting with my family and friends. Most of my children, Carol, Denise, Don and Val live in Elkton. One son, Craig lives in St. Cloud MN, yet. I have 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. My youngest great granddaughter, Amanda, was born in my 70th birthday last June. (See enclosed picture!)
My prayers were answered last December, when I fell ill and was forced to give up a 4 pack a day smoking habit. I guess God does work in mysterious ways.
My door is always open, and I look forward to seeing or hearing from everyone!

I'm Carol Janssen.(Daughter of Jimmy Lee and Roween Cameron, Granddaughter of Pratt and Lelia Cameron).

My husband, Marshall, and I live on an acreage outside of Elkton SD. We were married in Elkton 30 years ago. After a 20 year mining job in the Black Hills we moved home to Elkton in 1997. Marshall worked in Brookings at Twin City Fan for the next 6 years, and has now taken employment with the cattleman and farmer who lives directly across the road from us. He enjoys his time in the fields and stockyard. After working several different jobs I have settled on working as a store clerk at the Cenex Corner store in Elkton. I enjoy my job there (most days, anyway!).
We have 4 children. David is a teacher and coach in Bastrop, LA. Sue is currently living at home with us and is a CNA at the Riverview Manor in Flandreau, SD. Daniel is married to Jessica, and they have one daughter, Natalie, with another one on the way, due in Oct. of 2003. They recently moved to San Antonio, TX, where Dan is attending school to become a physicians assistant. Both he and Jessica graduated form SDSU in Brookings a few years ago, and he is following his dream to finish up what he had started! Our youngest, Steven, has taken employment with Gehl (skid loaders), in Madison SD. Steve also works on weekends as a DJ for Pure Pressure Sound located in Clear Lake SD.
Marshall and I grow a large garden every summer, and we enjoy canning and freezing the fruits of our labors in the fall. Keeping the acreage up to snuff and hosting family gatherings in the summers keeps us very busy.
We provide a home for various critters on the acreage. Mostly dogs, cats, and some geese. No horses, though! (Read my story on that in the Life's Story section.) Marshall STILL doesn't like horses! Hay Burners! Bah Humbug!
My spare hours are filled with playing around on the computer, working on the Family Newsletter, and publishing our church newsletter monthly. In the winter I usually crochet baby afghans, and do other small crafts. Three years ago I underwent a gastric bypass for weight reduction. It was successful, and I'm happy with my current weight, although I will never be "Twiggy"!
I love keeping in touch with family members, and hope to hear from everyone!
