My Magic Playmate

I have a little playmate,
That I can never see.
I call - and he will answer,
Then run and hide from me.

One morning bright and early,
I climbed high in a tree,
"Hello - hello," I called to him,
"Hello," he answered me.

I yell, "Yippie-yi-oh,: Like a cowboy,
"Yippie-yi-oh," yells he,
He mimics everything I say
He must be just like me.

I called down in a barrel,
"Yo-ho, yo-ho," I cried 'Yo-ho, yo-ho," he answered,
But he wasn't there inside.'

I laugh, "Ho-ho, ha, ha, ha, ha"
"Ho-ho, ha, ha, laughs he.
Oh playmate, how I wish you would,
Come here and play with me.

I think he must be magic,
But grown folks smile and say,
He only is my echo,
Coming back from far away!
